EYE SCREENING IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS – IMPORTANCE & RESULTS

Detecting refractive errors in primary school students plays a vital role in protecting and developing children's vision. At this age, their eyes are still in the process of maturing. If refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism are not identified and corrected in time, they may lead to serious consequences like permanent vision loss, which can significantly affect a child’s learning ability and overall development. Early detection allows timely intervention through appropriate eyewear or vision training, helping children study more effectively and improving their quality of life.

Recognizing this importance, the Đức Linh District project under Thiện Chí Center implemented a comprehensive eye screening and treatment program for primary school students. The project involved both local capacity-building and collaboration with ophthalmologists from Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital to diagnose refractive errors and provide consultation on eye health. Specific activities included:

  • Training local health workers and school teachers in basic screening skills to support student examinations

  • Conducting vision screening for all primary school students in the target area

  • Providing specialist eye exams for students with suspected vision difficulties

  • Distributing prescription glasses to students who were clinically diagnosed as needing them

As a result of the project, 9,615 students received vision screenings, 484 underwent specialist exams, and 328 were provided with prescription glasses across Đức Linh district.

Without early detection, these children could face worsening vision or significant challenges in their learning and daily lives. The program has had a practical impact and continues to be well-received by schools, meeting a genuine community need and contributing to public health care now and into the future.
