NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT FOR DIALYSIS PATIENTS

Ms. Trần Thị Bé Lan lives in Village 1, Đức Hạnh Commune, Đức Linh District, Bình Thuận Province. She discovered she had kidney failure 12 years ago. Since the diagnosis, she has undergone dialysis three times a week at the hospital. Due to the long duration of her treatment, her health has deteriorated. At one point, she fell and broke her leg, which left her unable to walk. Her household consists of four members; on her first day of dialysis, her youngest son had just started first grade, and now he is a first-year college student. Her husband works on 720 square meters of cashew trees. Whenever she goes for dialysis, he drives her to the hospital, which is 7 km away, by himself. When she is at home, her husband, Mr. Quế, works odd jobs for others, taking on whatever tasks are available. He doesn’t dare take a break from work because if he does, there won’t be money for her treatment or for their children’s education. Understanding their difficult situation, neighbors often save up jobs for him to help him earn extra income.

Ms. Lan frequently suffers from pain in her arms and legs, has persistent insomnia, and is in very poor health. Thanks to the monthly donations from Give.Asia and various sponsors, the Thiện Chí Center has allocated part of the funding to purchase additional calcium and Amway nutritional powder for her. During our most recent visit with Ms. Lan, she excitedly shared with us: “After using the calcium and vitamin B for three months, my leg and arm pain has decreased significantly, I can now sleep from 7 PM until morning. Unlike before, when I would toss and turn all night and couldn’t sleep, I always felt tired. Since using this calcium, I no longer suffer from constipation and I’m getting sick less often.” Seeing her improved health brings us great joy. We hope her story will inspire and motivate other dialysis patients.

When speaking with the mother, we learned that her child faced challenges in participating at school and exhibited behaviors that made it difficult for the school to accept him. After consulting a doctor, the child was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder and delayed language development. His vocabulary was very limited, and his speech was unclear. He would cry and scream persistently when something displeased him and often said, “Oh no.” When he wanted something, he would pull someone’s hand and point, leaving strangers unable to understand him. The child’s developmental level was assessed to be equivalent to 19 months old.

We started working with children with special educational needs in 2008. At that time, we focused on capacity building for primary school teachers and established the "Hạnh Phúc" intervention room, where children with difficulties in school received support with life skills and learning outside of regular classroom hours. In 2012, we began visiting individual families to teach children literacy and numeracy and organized group sessions on social skills, a program known as the "Community Learning Box." In 2017, we initiated direct intervention at the center for hearing-impaired children—this served as a precursor to our current intervention program where parents bring their children to the center weekly. In 2018, we joined the "Narrowing the Gap" program of LIN and secured funding to begin "early intervention"
