Nguyễn Thị Thu from Vũ Hòa Commune, Đức Linh District, is a single mother with four children. Her eldest son, Đức, dropped out of school early and works in the city, earning just enough to support himself. Currently, Thu is raising three young children who are in preschool and primary school. Thu has a heart condition and requires a pacemaker for life. She sells lottery tickets and roasted peanuts.

Currently, Thu is borrowing funds from Thiện Chí for her business, with an average monthly income of 1,250,000 VND per person. Thu mentioned that in the long run, her health cannot sustain her current business activities, and she wishes to borrow funds to sell lottery tickets, recyclable materials, grow vegetables, and raise chickens. Her home has land around it and a chicken coop.

Recognizing that as a single mother with poor health raising three young children, Thu faces significant difficulties, Thiện Chí evaluated her needs and found them to be in line with their purpose and principles. Thus, a plan to support greenhouse vegetable cultivation was implemented. The family contributes 50%, and Thiện Chí assists with the remaining 50% of the costs to build the greenhouse. Thiện Chí also provides technical assistance for composting organic fertilizer to grow vegetables, making it easier for the household to sell their produce. Once Thu's vegetable cultivation becomes successful, she will expand to raising chickens, using chicken manure to fertilize the vegetables, creating a closed-loop system. This will increase income, allow her to work from home, and improve the health of both the mother and her children.

When speaking with the mother, we learned that her child faced challenges in participating at school and exhibited behaviors that made it difficult for the school to accept him. After consulting a doctor, the child was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder and delayed language development. His vocabulary was very limited, and his speech was unclear. He would cry and scream persistently when something displeased him and often said, “Oh no.” When he wanted something, he would pull someone’s hand and point, leaving strangers unable to understand him. The child’s developmental level was assessed to be equivalent to 19 months old.

We started working with children with special educational needs in 2008. At that time, we focused on capacity building for primary school teachers and established the "Hạnh Phúc" intervention room, where children with difficulties in school received support with life skills and learning outside of regular classroom hours. In 2012, we began visiting individual families to teach children literacy and numeracy and organized group sessions on social skills, a program known as the "Community Learning Box." In 2017, we initiated direct intervention at the center for hearing-impaired children—this served as a precursor to our current intervention program where parents bring their children to the center weekly. In 2018, we joined the "Narrowing the Gap" program of LIN and secured funding to begin "early intervention"
