THE FAMILY'S COMPANIONSHIP IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

In September 2022, Hoang Anh—a young mother—overcame her family’s objections, with tears streaming down her cheeks every night, and, thanks to the recommendation of a kindergarten, brought her child to the Thien Chi Center for intervention.

When speaking with the mother, we learned that her child faced challenges in participating at school and exhibited behaviors that made it difficult for the school to accept him. After consulting a doctor, the child was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder and delayed language development. His vocabulary was very limited, and his speech was unclear. He would cry and scream persistently when something displeased him and often said, “Oh no.” When he wanted something, he would pull someone’s hand and point, leaving strangers unable to understand him. The child’s developmental level was assessed to be equivalent to 19 months old.

During the intervention process, the child frequently cried and displayed inappropriate behaviors. There were many times when the family felt discouraged about continuing the intervention. We repeatedly encouraged them to persevere, helping the family envision what his future might look like without intervention. Ultimately, with the family's support, the mother’s weekly dedication to taking her child to classes, and the teacher’s persistent efforts, the child completed his intervention program and successfully transitioned to integrating into kindergarten after two years of therapy.

We congratulate him—5-year-old Phuc. Congratulations to his family and to his mother—a resilient woman. Now, we see smiles on Hoang Anh’s face, replacing the tears she once shed.

Congratulations, Phuc! Now you can engage in conversations, answer simple questions, recognize yourself and your family members by name and age, talk about daily activities, take care of yourself, and request help when needed. You can count up to 100, identify shapes, group objects, wait your turn, play with friends, and manage your emotions.

We hope that in your school environment, you will integrate well and always be the lovable little boy you are.
