Livelihood support for disadvantaged households

The Thien Chi Center, in coordination with local authorities, Prodental Insurance and Saigon Children Charity, organized the project "Livelihood support for disadvantaged households". It aims to help revive the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic.

In April 2023, piglets were given to 10 disadvantaged households: 3 in Bac Ruong commune, 2 households in Mang To commune and 5 in Nghi Duc commune. The supported households received training in pig care techniques, assistance in disinfecting pens, vaccination against three diseases (swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, and hemorrhagic septicemia), ear notching, and especially guidance from skilled staff throughout the breeding process. As of October 10, 2023, the pig breeding success rate reached 100%, the pregnancy rate was 95%, and the sows gave birth to 8 out of 20 piglets, accounting for a rate of 40%. The support for pig breeding has helped disadvantaged households increase their income, contributing to the development of the family economy.

To facilitate the purchase of agricultural supplies, the project signed supply contracts with 7 fertilizer and feed agents in Bac Ruong, Mang To, and Nghi Duc communes. The project supported 70 disadvantaged households with non-interest-bearing material loans for crops and animals.

The households only need to go to the contracted agents to purchase necessary agricultural supplies, and we reimburse it. Currently, 14 households in Bac Ruong, 36 households in Mang To and 20 households in Nghi Duc commune have received help. They have been purchasing supplies from April to August 2023. Borrowed funds were mainly used to buy food for pigs and poultries, for seeds, plant protection products, and fertilizers for rice, corn, and rubber cultivation. All participating households used the borrowed money entirely to purchase supplies for agricultural production.

The loans helped disadvantaged households avoid costs of interest, and it narrowed the price gap for purchasing supplies at agents.

We sincerely thank our sponsors and hope for continued collaboration to provide further support to people facing difficulties.

The family consists of four members: the couple and their two school-aged children. Without any farmland of their own, they had to rent land to grow corn and lived in a temporary shelter next to her mother-in-law's house in Hamlet 1A. Aside from working on the rented fields, both husband and wife would take on any hired work they could find, but the jobs were unstable, resulting in an average income of only 875,000 VND per person per month.
