Life sometimes takes cruel and unexpected turns. This is the heartbreaking story of the family of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Minh (born in 1986), who is currently living in Gia Huynh Hamlet, Suoi Kiet Commune, Lam Dong Province (formerly part of Binh Thuan Province).
Mr. Minh’s family belongs to a poor household, with four members relying mainly on seasonal manual labor done by both husband and wife. However, in early 2022, a major misfortune struck when Mr. Minh was diagnosed with serious illnesses: unspecified anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. From being the main breadwinner of the family, he is now forced to depend on blood transfusions and hospital beds to survive, while his wife has had to stop working to care for him during repeated hospitalizations.
From 2022 to the end of 2024, Mr. Minh had to be frequently hospitalized at the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital for blood transfusions and treatment. Although he has health insurance, each treatment cycle still costs between 5 and 7 million VND, excluding travel and living expenses. The burden is even heavier as he has two children of school age: the elder child is currently a first-year university student majoring in Business Administration in Ho Chi Minh City, while the younger child is in grade 8.
Since early 2025, in order to reduce expenses and allow his wife to earn some income through casual work (rubber tapping and garment subcontracting), the family has reluctantly transferred Mr. Minh’s treatment to a local hospital. Even so, he still has to be hospitalized for about 10 days each month and requires six units of blood, along with many additional costs. Despite support from volunteer blood donors, expenses for meals, transportation, and donor assistance remain overwhelming, pushing the family to the brink of exhaustion.
Witnessing a sick father who still worries deeply about his children’s education is truly heart-wrenching. At this critical moment, a helping hand can mean the chance for Mr. Minh to continue living, and for his children to pursue their education without interruption.
